Fisher Men Congress

Fishermen’s Congress or Matsya Thozhilali Congress is one of the more Prominent cells by KPCC in recent past. Its aim to reach out to the fishermen population across the state. In a short time period they have managed to become an effective voice for this down-trodden section in the corridors of power. Fishermen’s congress interventions were instrumental in bringing many talented and enlightened leaders into the service of the congress party as well.

Kerala’s fishermen community stretches from south end to the north end of the state and their socio-economic condition is very poor when compared to that of other sections of Kerala society. The primary means of live hood for most of the individuals belonging to this community is still the sea and sea=allied activities. More over in recent times, anti-national elements, extremists and other fundamentalist forces have targeted this poverty ridden community in an effort to spread their influence and in so doing find new recruits to their cause.

The role of fishermen’s Congress in supporting the victims of tsunami, campaigns to effectively implement central schemes for fisher folk community, campaigns against anti-fisher folk policies. Campaigns to implement pro-fisher folk CRZ and CZM in Kerala coasts etc have been greatly appreciated by the community. As a result of these timely interventions, congress party and UDF earned sweeping election victories in coastal panchayats and assembly seats across the state.
