Non-resident Keralites have a very important role to play in Kerala’s economy. At present, NRK remittances are above Rs.25000 crores, accounting for 21 per cent of the state’s GDP. According to official figures, there are 25 lakh non-resident keralites and returnees. Many of them are unskilled or semi-skilled expatriates, exposed to the vagaries of labor laws of the countries where they have worked.
Being unskilled, a majority of the returnees face the problems face the problems of unemployment. There are hardly any welfare programs to address the unique problems faced by this segment of the society who have contributed so much to our state’s economy during their prime productive life. Despite their numerical strength and their substantial contribution to Kerala’s economy, their voice is rarely heard in the corridors of power.
